Traveling is a different experience for everyone, and the way you think about traveling and how much you’ve traveled in the past can determine how your trips are going to go. For example, if you have never flown before, that is going to be an exciting part, and if you have never been to a foreign language-speaking country, then that is going to be very exciting – and maybe a bit terrifying. But if you’re an experienced traveler who’s seen the world and wants something that will really get you feeling the excitement and adventure like you did the first time you set off, then here are some ways to find it:
Step into the unknown
Chances are, you haven’t seen every corner of this world. You might have visited every country in Europe five times, but you haven’t stepped off the continent. Or maybe you’ve spent a year going around Asia, but that still isn’t enough time to truly know it in and out. The first step of feeling the adventure is to go somewhere where you don’t feel familiar. A place that is unlike any you’ve seen before. It might be far away, but it might also be a part of your own country that you’ve never seen. You don’t know what you will find out there until you set out to find it, so forget the routes you’ve already charted and go somewhere completely foreign and new. You will feel the thrill of exploration and the unknown, which will definitely get your adventurous spirits high.
Do something memorable
Tasting local food is great, but unless it’s the best in the world, it’s not something that you will tell the grandkids about. Neither is seeing the touristy places that are always crowded and full of people, like the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum in Rome. However, doing something atypical, like getting a Japanese tattoo or building houses out of mud with the locals in Africa will definitely be a story to tell. You can seek adventure locally, too. Something like paragliding, bungee jumping or even going to an amazing concert of a local artist can be a memory you will never forget.
Meet up with the locals
There’s nothing worse for adventurers than being a tourist. You are chaperoned to all of the standard viewing points and you really don’t get to feel the actual city. Your best bet is to mingle with the locals and let them show you how they spend their time. There are few things more adventurous than allowing a bunch of people you’ve just met, whom you can barely communicate with, take you for a crazy night out. Of course, you have to be comfortable with trying new things, and it’s good if you’re not alone, but you will just have to let go at some point and follow the local way of doing things. Even if you find out it’s not your cup of tea, that is what learning about new cultures is all about, and you will be able to sit through one night.
Don’t be too reckless
In seeking adventure, we all think of a few dumb ideas, whether it’s to try and break into a landmark sight because we saw people do it in movies, or climb onto stupidly steep rocks to get the perfect view. The first rule of traveling is always: stay safe. Whether that means traveling with a buddy or not going hiking up dangerous paths will depend on your journey. You can find adventure and memorable moments without crossing the line into danger and recklessness, because a trip can turn sour very quickly. Seek adventure, but keep yourself and your companions safe.
Not every trip needs to be full of adventure to be worthwhile and fun. You can have an amazing trip where you do nothing but relax and take it easy, staying in your comfort zone. But some people crave adventure, especially if it’s a break from their everyday, comfortable lives. Seeking adventure isn’t a bad decision, and it’s not unobtainable. Actually, the best way to find adventure is to not seek it out at all, but go out with an open mind and open heart, and you can be sure adventure will come your way.
