Having a computer science degree is an extremely versatile and beneficial degree to have. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that jobs in computer development are projected to grow 19% by 2016 which means that 5,400 more jobs will be opening up for graduates in a similar degree. Similarly, jobs in software development are projected to grow by 24% by 2016 and open up more than 302,500 more jobs in that same period of time. There is no shortage of jobs for people who are majoring in a field that is related to computer science. For recent graduates, the job market has opened up as well. The great news is that it is also extremely easy to create your own business and work as a freelancer.  

  1. Look into Jobs that Earn Your Experience First

The first thing that you want to do is gain experience working in similar fields. The world has moved online, and because of that, web developers are in more demand than ever. The job market for web developers is expected to grow by 27% in the next ten years. What you would be responsible for is how the website looks and how well a person can interact with it. You will create the layout of the site, integrate graphics that interact with the person browsing, and make sure that every aspect of the site is working properly. You might also be responsible for fixing sites that have been created improperly. Every state as positions open for the job and there are cases where you can work from home. A web developer salary is, on average, is $66,000 though the higher paid developers earn over $120,000. Starting in this type of position will give your marketable skills and experience that will help you create your own business.

  1. Figure Out What Type of Business You Want

Once you have the skills that you need, you can choose what type of business you want to have. You have several options. You can create a business that employs other web designers and then market out the skills as a group. You would basically be the boss of people who are doing the same thing as you. To do this, start on your own and market out your skills as a freelancer. You can then pull in other friends to do the same thing and slowly grow it into a business. You can do a similar thing with any type of business as a computer science major.

Other options for types of businesses include software development, IT support, marketing, internet marketplace, and anything else that will allow you to use your skills. With any of these options, just make sure that you’re enjoying the job that you end up with.

If you’ve decided to work individually as a freelancer, you’ll need to find a way to market yourself. The best way to do this is to start by getting your name out there. It’s fine to start by working for family member and friends, anything that could help you gain experience in the freelancing world. Ask anyone that you work to offer referrals and to get other people to talk about what you’re doing.

The next most important thing that you can do is to network with other people. Sites like Linkedin or Handshake are the best places where you can go to do this. Connect with all of your Facebook friends, old bosses, and anyone else who you know. Then, reach out and ask them who they know as well.

If you want to have your own business, you have to be willing to work at it. You also need to know that it is vitally important to market yourself in the right way. Make it clear what it is that you do and what it is that you don’t do. You need to be conscious that people are always looking for someone to work for them and if you’re lucky, you might be working on multiple projects at once. Always make sure that your prices are competitive.
